VAlanthropy Legacy Brick Policy

Freedom and Hope Garden at Hidden Wounds Village Alpha

VAlanthropy’s Legacy Brick Program provides donors with an opportunity to leave a lasting mark at Hidden Wounds Village Alpha while supporting the development and long-term sustainability of permanent affordable housing for veterans.

Donors who make a qualifying charitable contribution of $1,000 or more to VAlanthropy may choose to receive one complimentary engraved recognition brick planned for placement in the Freedom and Hope Garden at Hidden Wounds Village Alpha.

Purpose of the Program

Legacy Bricks are intended to recognize meaningful support for VAlanthropy’s mission and may be used to:

  • Honor or remember a veteran or service member.
  • Recognize a military family.
  • Celebrate an individual or family.
  • Recognize a business, civic group, or community organization.
  • Share a brief message of service, gratitude, hope, remembrance, or community.

Participation in the Legacy Brick Program is optional. Donors may decline recognition and remain anonymous if they prefer.

Qualifying Contributions

A charitable contribution of $1,000 or more may qualify for one complimentary Legacy Brick.

Additional qualifying gifts may be eligible for additional bricks, subject to availability and program guidelines.

Gifts received through approved giving methods, including donor-advised funds, may be eligible for recognition when permitted by the rules of the donor-advised fund sponsor.

The Legacy Brick is a recognition benefit and does not mean that the donor’s full contribution will be used for the brick or garden. Contributions support VAlanthropy’s charitable mission and approved organizational and project priorities unless the gift has been accepted with a specific written restriction.

Inscription Guidelines

All inscriptions must be respectful and consistent with VAlanthropy’s veteran-focused charitable mission.

Legacy Bricks may include:

  • Names.
  • Military service information.
  • Memorial or honorary messages.
  • Family names.
  • Business or organization names.
  • Short messages of gratitude, service, hope, or remembrance.

VAlanthropy will establish standard limits for the number of lines, characters, font style, and available symbols or graphics.

Inscriptions may not contain:

  • Profanity, obscene, hateful, discriminatory, threatening, or defamatory language.
  • Political campaign endorsements or opposition to candidates.
  • Partisan campaign messages.
  • Commercial advertising or promotional claims.
  • Unauthorized trademarks, logos, or copyrighted material.
  • Language that implies ownership, control, or naming rights over VAlanthropy property.
  • Religious proselytizing or language suggesting VAlanthropy requires or endorses a particular faith.
  • Content inconsistent with VAlanthropy’s mission, nonprofit status, legal responsibilities, or funding requirements.

VAlanthropy reserves the right to request revisions or decline inscriptions that do not meet these standards.

Inclusive Recognition

The Freedom and Hope Garden is intended to be an inclusive space honoring service, sacrifice, community, and support for veterans.

VAlanthropy does not condition housing, services, participation, donor recognition, or organizational involvement on religious belief, political affiliation, or other protected characteristics.

Respectful references to an individual’s faith, military chaplaincy, or personal beliefs may be considered when they recognize that individual and do not imply organizational religious affiliation or advocacy.

Approval of Brick Wording

Donors will be asked to submit their requested inscription.

Whenever practical, VAlanthropy will provide a proof for donor review before engraving.

The donor is responsible for confirming the accuracy of:

  • Names.
  • Dates.
  • Military rank.
  • Branch of service.
  • Spelling.
  • Punctuation.
  • Organizational names.

Once a proof has been approved and submitted for production, changes may not be possible.

Placement and Installation

Legacy Bricks are planned for placement in the Freedom and Hope Garden at Hidden Wounds Village Alpha.

Because Hidden Wounds Village Alpha remains under development, VAlanthropy cannot guarantee a specific installation date or exact brick location.

Placement and installation will depend on factors including:

  • Final site and garden plans.
  • Permitting.
  • Construction progress.
  • Accessibility requirements.
  • Procurement schedules.
  • Contractor availability.
  • Weather and site conditions.

VAlanthropy will determine the final location, arrangement, and installation schedule for all bricks.

A Legacy Brick does not provide the donor with ownership of the brick, land, garden, or any other VAlanthropy property, and does not create permanent naming rights or decision-making authority.

Future Maintenance or Relocation

VAlanthropy intends to maintain the Freedom and Hope Garden as part of Hidden Wounds Village Alpha.

However, bricks may need to be repaired, replaced, relocated, or removed because of construction changes, maintenance, accessibility needs, weather damage, safety requirements, redevelopment, or other circumstances affecting the property.

When reasonably possible, VAlanthropy will attempt to preserve donor recognition if changes to the site become necessary.

Permanent placement in one specific location cannot be guaranteed.

Donor Privacy

Donors may choose whether they wish to be publicly recognized.

VAlanthropy will respect requests to:

  • Remain anonymous.
  • Exclude the donor’s name from public donor lists.
  • Keep the contribution amount private.
  • Limit promotional use of an individual brick.

General photographs of the Freedom and Hope Garden may include installed bricks as part of project updates and organizational communications.

Charitable Contribution Acknowledgment

VAlanthropy will provide appropriate charitable contribution acknowledgment for qualifying gifts.

The charitable deductibility of a contribution may depend on the individual donor’s circumstances and the value, if any, of benefits received in connection with the gift.

VAlanthropy does not provide individual legal, accounting, or tax advice. Donors should consult their own professional adviser regarding their charitable contribution.

Refunds

Charitable contributions are generally final and nonrefundable except when required by law or when VAlanthropy determines that an administrative error has occurred.

A donor may request changes to an inscription before the brick enters production.

Once engraving has begun, changes or replacement requests resulting from donor-approved wording may involve an additional cost.

Program Administration

VAlanthropy administers the Legacy Brick Program and reserves the right to:

  • Establish or modify inscription standards.
  • Determine installation schedules and locations.
  • Approve or decline inscriptions.
  • Modify the garden design when necessary.
  • Update this policy as the Hidden Wounds Village Alpha project develops.

Material changes to the Legacy Brick Program will be handled in accordance with VAlanthropy’s governance procedures.
