Groundbreaking Marks the Beginning of Hidden Wounds Village Alpha

Speakers at Hidden Wounds Village launch

March 17, 2025 marked a defining moment in VAlanthropy's mission to build permanent, affordable housing for veterans in South Carolina.

Community leaders, supporters, partners, and advocates gathered in Sumter to celebrate the official groundbreaking of Hidden Wounds Village Alphaโ€”the first veteran-focused housing community developed by VAlanthropy.

More than the start of construction, the ceremony represented years of planning, collaboration, and determination to create a place where veterans can find stability, dignity, and community.

Hidden Wounds Village Alpha is designed as a 12-unit permanent housing community that combines affordable housing with access to supportive services through a network of trusted community partners. The vision has always been to build more than apartmentsโ€”we are building a neighborhood where healing, independence, and long-term success can take root.

The groundbreaking celebrated several important milestones already achieved by the organization, including securing the project site, advancing engineering and development work, and receiving support that helped move the vision from planning into construction.

For everyone who attended, the ceremony was more than a photo opportunity. It was a visible reminder that meaningful change happens when a community comes together around a shared purpose.

Today, that momentum continues.

Construction has continued to move forward as VAlanthropy works alongside contractors, donors, volunteers, and community partners to bring Hidden Wounds Village Alpha to completion. Every donation, sponsorship, partnership, and introduction helps move the project one step closer to welcoming its first residents.

The groundbreaking may have marked the beginning of construction, but it also marked the beginning of something much largerโ€”a model for veteran-focused communities that can inspire similar projects across South Carolina and beyond.

Together, we are building more than homes. We are building the foundation for healing, stability, and hope.

Every phase matters.

Site work, utilities, grading, planning, and preparation are all part of building a community designed for healing, long-term stability, and reintegration.

This is progress you can see.

We are grateful for every donor, volunteer, partner, and supporter helping move Hidden Wounds Village Alpha forward. The work is not finished, but the foundation is being built.

June 2026

It is a beautiful day in sunny South Carolina, and progress is moving at Hidden Wounds Village Alpha in Sumter.

Today, Thompson Turner Construction is on site moving dirt for elevation work, the retention pond, and the future parking area.

This may look like early site work, but every step matters. Every load moved, every plan reviewed, and every phase completed brings us closer to building permanent affordable low-income housing for veterans who need stability, healing, and a safe place to call home.

Here, you can see Tom Lash, one of VAlanthropyโ€™s founders, looking over the plans as the team walks the site and reviews the progress happening on the ground.

Hidden Wounds Village Alpha is not standing still. It is moving forward through planning, construction, partnerships, and community support.

This is what building hope looks like.

Working to Finalize Building Plans

July 2026

Another important step forward for Hidden Wounds Village Alpha.

VAlanthropy CEO Fred Altman met with architect Larry Woodrum to finalize the project plans being sent to the SC Housing Trust Fund.

This is the kind of work most people never see, but it is what moves a project from vision to reality. Plans are reviewed. Details are checked. Requirements are prepared. Each responsible step brings us closer to permanent affordable housing for veterans in Sumter.

We are grateful for the professionals, partners, donors, and community supporters helping move this mission forward.

A future for veterans is taking shape, one step at a time.
