Building Smarter Paths to Giving
This week, the VAlanthropy team attended a charitable giving conference hosted by the National Christian Foundation (NCF), bringing together nonprofit leaders and professionals to explore philanthropy’s changing landscape.
For us, attending was about much more than fundraising.
It was about learning.
One of the most important conversations centered on a simple idea: charitable giving does not always begin with writing a check.
Donor-advised funds, appreciated assets, retirement assets, estate planning and other non-cash giving strategies can provide individuals, families and business owners with additional ways to support causes that matter to them. Yet many donors—and even many nonprofit and community organizations—may not realize these options are available.
That creates an opportunity for better education, stronger relationships and more thoughtful conversations about generosity.
For VAlanthropy, those conversations matter.
Through Hidden Wounds Village Alpha in Sumter, South Carolina, VAlanthropy is developing permanent affordable housing designed to provide veterans with something fundamental to long-term stability: a place to call home, surrounded by an ecosystem of supportive partnerships and opportunities to move forward.
Building those homes requires more than construction funding. Creating something sustainable requires long-term thinking, responsible stewardship, strong community partnerships, and a diverse base of philanthropic support.
The conference also reinforced the importance of relationships between nonprofits and the professional advisors who already serve individuals and families—including financial advisors, wealth managers, CPAs, attorneys, and charitable-giving professionals.
VAlanthropy does not provide financial, investment, legal, or tax advice. What we can do is continue learning, build relationships with knowledgeable professionals, and make sure supporters know there may be more than one way to participate in the mission.
Perhaps one of our biggest takeaways was this:
Sometimes the opportunity to give already exists. The missing piece is simply knowing what is possible.
We returned from the conference with new knowledge, new questions, and several ideas worth exploring as VAlanthropy continues strengthening its fundraising and long-term sustainability strategy.
Education is part of building, too.
The more we learn, the better prepared we are to steward the relationships, resources, and trust that make permanent affordable veteran housing possible.
